III. USING YOUR
PIPEFITTER CALCULATOR:
All calculations in
Pipefitter Calculator
are designed for long radius butt weld fittings. This program calculates by the same principals used in the field when figuring offsets manually. Some of the take-offs do not match the "books" exactly, but will be within a few hundredths of an inch. If negative numbers are the result, the information entered is either incorrect or the offset cannot be made under the given conditions. All miters will be cut out of ell 90 degrees unless otherwise specified. Please be advised, when working with pipe 3" and smaller, there may be a memo suggesting you use a factory ell 45 degree or a mitered ell 45 degree. This is due to the difference in the radius of the factory ell 45 degree and the factory ell 90 degree.
How does it work? There are three cell colors including yellow, red and blue. Each cell has a specific meaning and use.
YELLOW: The yellow cell is the most important of the three. Measurement information must be entered into this cell. The program uses this cell to compute the result. Enter the field measurements and the known information such as pipe size, degree of fitting, etc., into this cell. Make sure the information is entered correctly. One wrong entry will result in unnecessary headaches!
RED: The red cell provides the calculation result. This would typically be the cut length of the piping and/or specific degree of the fitting needed. You cannot enter information into this cell.
BLUE: The blue cell contains useful information such as face-to-face measurements, fitting take-offs and maybe the travel or set. Like the red cell, you cannot enter information into this cell.
All measurements are in inches. FRACTIONS OF AN INCH MUST BE ENTERED IN DECIMAL FORM. If you know what the decimal equivalent is, you may enter it yourself. If you do not know the decimal equivalent for the fraction you want, you can use the automatic Decimal to Fractions Conversion Sheet in the program, which will give you the decimal equivalent to the fraction, and, automatically enter it into the yellow measurement cell.
How to use the Decimal to Fractions Conversion Sheet:
To use the conversion sheet, touch the stylus on the light blue cell (where it displays Gap, Set, Width, etc.) to the left of the yellow measurement cell and this will bring you to the Decimal To Fractions Conversion Sheet. Once there, tap the fraction you want and you will be automatically brought back to the calculation, with the decimal already entered into the yellow measurement cell.
EXAMPLE: To enter a 1/8-inch gap, hold the stylus on the light blue GAP cell. The conversion sheet will come on screen. Tap the 1/8 fraction once and you will be brought back to your calculation with the decimal result of .125 already entered into the yellow cell.
In cases where whole numbers and fractions are used together, enter the whole number into the yellow cell, tap the corresponding light blue box to the left, find your fraction and tap it to be brought back to the calculation with the decimal equivalent entered in the yellow cell beside your whole number.
EXAMPLE: If the SET measurement is 36 ¾ inches, enter 36 in the yellow cell and then hold the stylus on the light blue SET cell. The conversion sheet will come on screen. Tap the ¾ fraction and you will be brought back to your calculation with the decimal result of .75 already entered in the yellow cell next to the 36.
The results of all calculations will always be in the
decimal inch and decimal degree forms. No fittings
are in the degree, minute, or second form .
